The distribution of the Romanian dialects (Macedo-Romanian (Aromanian),
Megleno-Romanian, Istrio-Romanian and Daco-Romanian) is consistent with a center
of dispersal south of the Danube, as is the shared substrate with Albanian and
the predominance of Slavic (Bulgarian and or Serbian) loanwords. The
territories north of the Danube were part of the Eurasian steppe environment
during the first millennium, and it indeed seems likely that they were only
occupied by Wallachian farmers after the Gepid-Goths, Huns, Avars, Bolgars,
Magyars and Pecheneg-Cumans had left or had also adopted a more sedentary
lifestyle (case of the Magyars).
