So is Sicily, England, Iceland, Sjælland. From which we may deduce...
No, seriously, the transport mode that mattered in those days was
that by sea. The role of Roman sea-borne transports has been sadly
neglected; just look at the geographical situation of the Roman
empire: coasts around a common sea, bound to collapse with
developments in land transport (as did later the British empire).
Which doesn't mean you're not right about Sardinia. So /ke/ -> /c^e/
in the empire later than the conquests?
