I see. Sorry, your reference was to a
question asked a while ago (#13978). I was away from home and my computer at the
time. OK, there are several alternative theories of IE dispersal, the most
influential one after the Kurgan hypothesis being perhaps Renfrew's "Fertile
Crescent" hypothesis, locating the first IEs in the Near East. My favourite
hypothesis has for some time been that of the "Danubian homeland", which
puts the speakers of PIE (by which I mean the _latest_ common ancestor of
all the languages of the family) in and near the middle Danube basin, and
identifies them more or less with the "Linear Pottery farmers". A lot of
