Old Persian |xšaþriya| "king" is Modern Persian |šah|. Both initial xš- and now even xw- are simplified. Initial sequences are broken up because of Arabic influences (in Arabic, no word can begin with two consonants).
 
Pashto, on the other hand, has initial xšw- and many other initial consonant combinations, not to mention retroflex consonants (except in Pakistan) that came from somewhere.
