What could the word for a carpenter be?

There is a word, vardhaki which occurs in the Ra_ma_yan.a connoting a
carpenter. It is explained in the Sanskrit lexicon as related
to 'shearing, cutting'.

There are cognate substratum words in Munda, Gujarati and other
languages of Bha_rata.
