There must have been some kind of association, like that between Odin and Ygdrasill in Scandinavian lore. While I think that the Irmin- part of "Irminsul" originally referred to the cosmic dimension of the column, the fact that Irmin was also Wodan's byname suggests at least the possibility of interpreting the name as "Wodan's pillar".

The first equation doesn't look all that crazy to me, although the denkmal part does. Besides, you'd only have to hang in there eight days ;-).

Mightn't it be "the column of Woden"?
