Sometimes the Sanskrit prefix ni- does have a private or negative meaning.   This can be derived as a secondary meaning from componds with ni- meaning "down", but sometimes ni- appears where we expect nir-, and Western scholars then tend to call it a "wrong reading".
 
e.g. ni-dhana  = having no property, poor.
      ni-manyu  = not angry   (manyu can = angry)
