matter any more. I thought that the "expulsion" PRIOR
to the first mention of the Eruli near the Black Sea
was the better hypothesis. But after some discussions
(with scholars like Andreas Schwarcz of Vienna and
others) I realized that a pretty strong case could be
made for alternative views. So I have suspended
judgement. The only thing I am ABSOLUTELY certain of
is that the Eruli were NOT settled at the mouth of the
Don in the period 200-450 AD, and that the atatements
of Ablabius/Cassiodorus/Jordanes to that effect are
founded on an old misunderstanding initiated by
Dexippos.******
