Who says that non-cognate words can't be similar-sounding or even homophonous? They often are. My own impression, though, is that "Herul-" and erila-/erla- have probably got the same etymology. Not because they are too similar to be unrelated, but merely because I can't think of a plausible alternative analysis of "Herul-".

If they are not, the poor Germani would have had a hard time distiguishing between *erul- the social class and *herul- the tribe/people.
