Oops. I mean Friedrich von _Schlegel_. Sorry for this alliterative confusion. Schlegel died in in 1829, and the first insights concerning regular sound correspondences, which were beginning to circulate about that time, did not penetrate his linguistic work. He had no means of telling real cognates from spurious ones.
