The laryngeal reconstsruction is mildly speculative, based on the hypothesis that the 'ruler' word is related to the verb *h3reg^- 'stretch, extend, direct'. It isn't anything new, is it? See even the American Heritage Dictionary list of roots:

Of course one can work with the strictly comparative *re:g^- 'king' in the branches that do not preserve a reflex of the initial laryngeal.

I'm gonna cry. Just when I think I know everything, Piotr slaps me with
something new...

Where did *H3reg^- come from?? I thought it was *reg^-! What's going on?
I feel as though the world as I know it is crumbling before me :) Please
explain.
