****GK: I wonder if "Rogas" could also be a twisted
"YUGRA"? This would keep the perspective in the
North.*****
(AS) Again, from the beginning. What do we have now?

*****GK: Probably just "people"(or heathen) (the Chud'
of the Karelian isthmus; but if "thiudos" applies to
all the peoples enumerated in the list then "in
aunxis" should be understood as "those [i.e.
"thiudos"] of Aunxis"). Golthescytha ("the Golden
Scythian") appears to be a pompous "adulatorism"
applied to Hermanaric.*****

>(AS) then "bubegenas coldas" ??

*****GK: But would "arctoi gentes" reside that far
south?=== One other possibility looms, which would
keep this geographically in the North even if partly
associated with Volga and Kama. One group of Volga
Bulgars (described in Ibn Fadlan's report of his
921/922 peregrination) was known as "Asghil", and they
resided in the north or northwest portion of that
state. What if the above excerpt be reconstructed not
as BUBEGENAS COLDAS but as BUBEGEN ASCOLDAS with
"ascoldas" standing for these "asghil" or "askil(t)"?
