It was very popular in books references to Vanir as existence of a
Pre-Germanic people, who were conquered by the Aesir-Germanic tribes. But I
think this could be a surviving Nazi concept of Aesir as the Warrior gods of
blond Germanic conquerors, while Vanir was dark-haired tribes that worship
peaceful teluric deities. The Aesir x Vanir duality represented PIE myths,
not necessarily pre-historic people.
