My fault. It's my ambition to be as accurate as Trubachev, but e-mails are too often written in haste. Correct 1953 to 1931 for the article below, but it's his 1953 article in BSLP#49 ("Le nom de l'"autour" [cf. astur, PG] en slave") that lays out the "hawk" etymology. Sorry for this unnecessary confusion.

What puzzles me is that Trubachev (usually accurate as to
references), commenting on Vey's etymology (in just some words that
don't clarify anything, including his opinion on that) in two
different books makes the same reference (BSLP#49 (1953), 24-40). Was
this Society so productive as to publish at least 17 (!) issues
during a year?
