*****GK: Our linguists may clarify the linguistic
aspects of this. Historically, what I've called the
Old Ugrians (proto-Hungarians) are those people who
separated from their forest kin in Siberia and the
Urals, adopted a pastoral nomadic economy, and
participated in the trek westward along with the Turki
tribal unions of the steppes. In the early 9th century
they are known as vassals of the Khazar Kaganate, and
occupy the area near the lower Don and Sea of Azov.
While they constantly seem to have been picking up
extraneous ethnic elements (esp. Turki and Slavic)
they retained their basic "Ugrian" identity at the
time of their conquest of Hungary (ca. 895-906). The
Kyivan Hill (somewhat south of the medieval city) I
referred to was called "the Ugrian Hill" (we don't
really know why exactly, but the Kyivan chronicler
imagined that on their way westward the nomadic
Ugrians had stopped here for a while.)Today the
"Ugrian Hill" is known as "Askold's Tomb" (Askoldova
Mohyla).******
