Just have discovered your suggestion is a classical solution (since
the end of the 19th c.). I suspect we have something regular here:
*mes- 'measure, change' > *me:s-en-ko-, *g^Hoi- 'jump' > *g^Ho:i-en-
ko-. (deverbatives, prolongated vocalism).
