Joao, Atrt = Athirat = "Asherah of the Sea" whilst a goddess of the
Ocean was not Yamm's wife, but the wife of El. There is a myth on
how he woed and won her. Like him she was called Qadesh (Holy). She
was called the mother of the Gods and was portrayed as having seventy
children. At Ugarit she is shown wearing a Minoan dress, standing
between Ibexes and holding lilies in her hands. Her images are
amongst the most popular icons in Israel in all hisotrical periods -
usually little pillar goddesses with her hands beneath her breasts,
wearing a Hathor hair style.
Her only association with Yamm was she offered to be a go between in a
dispute between Yamm and El. Baal was horified and refused to allow
his mother go.
