It's from the Iranian *kanth- "village, town, city" found in such
words as Yarkand, Samarkand, Tashkent, New Pers. kand "village",
Pashto kandai "part of a town" and Ossetic kænt "building". Kanth-
is from the root kan- "to cover" (of roofed buildings and thence to
an aggregate to form a town).
