For what it's worth, here's my personal 'rationalisation', heavily influenced by modern technology perhaps, but a very real psychological sensation. I conceive of the action as in some way 'earthing' myself, and thus disipating the bad luck [in its AngloAmerican manifestation!]. There is also the understanding that wood is in some way a good honest sort of a substance, perhaps in a way that metal, and certainly not plastic, could ever be.
