Aaah, I think I know where all this is coming from. I propose
that the use of these objects (iron, wood, needle, etc) relates
to the "World Object" whatever it may be (World Tree, World Pin,
World Mountain). In some traditions, it was a tree that held up
the universe. In another, it was a pin. Yet others, a mountain or
a pole.

Perhaps, the "knocking of wood" was originally done to make
the gods pay attention to you when you ask them for their
protection or for things one needs. Whatever material was being
used for a medium for divine communication, it was meant as an
abstract representation of the World Object. The World Object is,
of course, one's only direct connection to the world of the gods.

Just a thought.
