But they would surely have recognised their unity the very moment they got off the boats and met the non Germanic Britons. Any Jute, Frisian or whatever, would thus naturally become one of their own in the face of the truly foreign Wealas??

I appreciate what you're all saying about the difference that readily becomes apparent in organisational terms once you get a proper state apparatus up and running, like Alfred, but I'm thinking more on the terms of the psychological impulses behind these phenomena. To me, the nation and 'tribe' is one and the same.
