He meant "nationalism" in a bigoted sense: nationalism in Eritrea, Chechnya, Kosovo, East Timor and the Indian reservations in America is way different than White Anglo-Saxon Protestant nationalism in the US (i.e. the "Religious Right").  The former is a struggle to obtain and preserve liberty to speak one's own language, to live in one's own culture, to follow one's own spiritual path.  The other is just chauvinism.

What is wrong with nationalism? The history of civilizations of the
last two centuries is a history of adoring nationalism. See, for
e.g., what is happening NOW in the Balkans or in Central Asia.
