It means that there were two Beowulfs. One of them, mentioned in the
prologue, was Scyld's son, and therefore a (Ga:r-)Dene -- that is, a
(spear-wielding) Dane -- whereas the other, Hygelac's prize thegn,
Beowulf the Great, was a Gaut (or Ge:at, if you prefer the Anglo-
Saxon pronunciation).
