O-:From: Joseph S Crary says:
O-: I recently found information on the Gaete and/or Tyran-Gaete. A
O-:tribal confederation that primarily occupied the region between the
O-:Deniester and Danube. It seems everyone classifies them as
O-:everything. At times called Thracian, at others called Scythian. I
O-:just noticed they occupied the area the Kimmer were last reported.
O-:I'm wondering if they may have been one of the tribal groups that
O-:made up Kimmeria? Also Gaete appears similar to gais- gai-, gae- tae
O-:as in Gaestae-spearmen. Just found this interesting as Beowulf is
O-:called a Gaete who are also called Spear-Danes with the whole
O-:Cimbrae, Kimmer, Himmer thing.
The Getae (as traditionally spelled here) were one of two major groups
of Thracian tribes that interlocked mosaically north of the Moesi; in
geographic Thrace; pre-Roman. The other being Daci (Dacian). The
conglomeration referred to as Geto-Daci, even before the pre-Roman
Dacian state emerged. (Its leader claiming Dacian links, but the people
arguably equally Getae and Dacian with a liberal splash of intrusives.
The Tyragetae in my interpretation were simply a small portion of those
Getae about the Dniester..then called Tyra (and I think called Tyra
before the Greek city of similar name. ) Many were pushed out by
Scythians and resettled south and east into Moesia and other Dacian and
Getae held areas. Those that remained would have become a bit
"Scythianized". They would have to be at least neighbors of Cimmeria in
geography and time, and cohabiting in some areas pre-Scythian. I have
no idea on the more easterly Massagetae..and can't speculate even to a
connection with the getae at the Tyra (Dniester) and west. (But I do
believe that Thracians extended more easterly before horse nomad
troubles.) (I have some input coming on some of your earlier
questions..and some inquiries out as well..patience :-)
