I thought this was inspired by the French phrase "sacre
bleu" (a euphimism for the sacreligious "sacre dieu"). The phrase
"blue blood" then was a mockery of the French who used it and
became a name for the French, particularly uppety rich ones.

Have I gotten the details wrong? At any rate, I'm skeptical of the
"blue veins" explanation. Sometimes people are too fat to have
blue veins. :P
