I'm inclined to interpret such instances of Skt. -au as reflexes of word-final *-o: resulting from contraction in the sequences *..oH-h2a and *..oH-e; cf. thematic duals of the type *wlkW-o-h1 > *wlkWo: > vr.kau (~ vr.ka:).

There is also the weird perfect 1,3 sing of -a: (< *eH) roots of Sanskrit: From stha:, 'stand', (< *steH), we get tasthau (?< *stestoHu).
