Responding to Christopher Gwinn's splendid answer, I can add there are
attempts to link the white word with 'elf', *albh, 'divine workmen' in
Indic, and our pointy-eared earth-dwelling creatures here in the West.

EIEC adds, under 'Elf', that the the two words might be related to
Hittite "alpa- 'cloud', originally as the 'shining one' or the like."

At an early stage, our concept of 'white', 'shining', 'bright', clear,
and the such would all be covered by a single word or so.
