What is the difference between Aramaic and Syriac?

What is the status of Aramaic at the present day? At work a Syrian
Christian student came to me about a computer programming query, I was
surprised when he told me that some of his relatives back home still
speak "Assyrian" :: I suppose that he meant Aramaic or Syriac.
