As to romantic narratives: there's nothing romantic about drowning.
"Village elders": a lot of historical linguistics gets its stuff from
village elders, be they Austronesian or Albanian.
As for "amateur", that's right that what I am. I don't have the time
and resources to sift the material I have found. I have dragged
something into this forum (and I know no one else would have done
it), you professionals may now use it as you wish.

As for Proto-Austronesian: As far as I could determine from local
Lingistics library, PA has only been tentatively reconstructed,
precisely for the reasons you cite. So I didn't try to find PA
forms.
