There's an alternative theory, advocated for instance by Kurzová
("From IE to Latin"), deriving it from a *-dh- suffix (and linking it
to the Germanic weak preterit and the Greek -the:- aorists).
Kurzová's treatment completely fails to change my mind about it being
nonsense.
