The nasal would have left some traces in Slavic. One might equally well try to etymologise Lech Walesa's surname (Wal/e,sa) in such terms :)) Just a facciful word-play, I'm afraid.
 
Puhvel allows himself quite a lot of interpretative licence here. We really know next to nothing about Veles (or about most other Slavic deities, for that matter). A name survives here or there, but there's hardly enough data to reconstruct a complete pantheon.

There was attempts to consider VELESU < VELE(n)SU < *E(n)SU = Indian Asura = Avestic Ahura = Goth Ansus.
There was also the hypothesis that Velesu is related to Lithuanian Velnias (also synchretized to Christian Devil).
Jaan Pahvel considers him as the Russian equivalent of Odinn and Esus, a god linked to death, magic and wisdom - the Northern Europe version of PIE *Waxtnos (call him as you want), the Terrible Sovereign.
