Robert Graves sugested that originally Satyrs were horse-footed instead goat-footed.

Horse-footed satyrs? I thought they were always goatish, complete with horns, weren't they?

The problem in explanation of the centaur with mounted warriors from Thrace or even Scythia is that Centaurs were not associated to these regions. The Centaurs lived in Thessalia and Magnesia. Robert Graves stated that the primitive form of Centaurs was like the satyrs, a horse-footed man. The figure with horse body and man body mixed camed after.
