That is still discussed. I have read, recently, that MARS was always
a God of War, which would be quite natural, for the Latins were quite
warlike; one way or another, MARS had no connection with the
Underworld. Neither did ARES, THOR, INDRA, all of them were the
representatives of the God of War in their respective pantheons,
according Dumezil.
