If that's how you etymologise President Putin's name, you're wrong :(. It's base is Slavic *poNti- 'road, path', a very respectable IE word (*pont-x-), as you doubtless realise.
 
Romance associations aside, Latin puto 'reckon, count, consider, etc.' underlies the word comPUTer.
