Mallory traces the origin of the names of the south Russian/Ukranian
rivers to the Iranians. *Danu meaning river. Danuvius (Danube, Donau) is a
Celtic name from the same IE root. Examples he gives are Don /' river',
Dnieper (*danu apara) 'river to the rear', and Dniester (*danu nazdya)
'river to the front'.
