>>>Gerry: Earlier is certainly better. When do you propose that the young
un learn 2 "mother" languages at once? Gerry

>>Marc: I don't know: from birth? or at 2-3 years or so, when the child goes
to the creche or school? Probably it's important not to mix both languages:
the same person should always speak the same language with the young child,
eg, father vs mother, or at a somewhat later age: parents vs school?

>Gerry: We'll, we're not getting anywhere. Let me try again. Do you think
that language begins at birth or is there a language template present in the
brain before the child is born? Gerry

Some believe the fetus in utero already becomes accustomed to its mother's
sounds. Since about 3 months of age there are "dialogs" between mother &
child. But the first "words" appear at ca.1 year. This may be called
language already. What do you mean by template? Of course we have
brains that easily learn language (or better: speech -- chimps can perhaps
learn some sort of ASL but not to speak).
