Well, Piotr, here you go again, why label it a soapbox? They're found in
Hyde Park and its pejorative. Inet is not a lecture hall. Anybody is freely
entitled to whatever views, interests or whatever they have. Mine are
somowhat askew the well trodden paths. A simplest solution would be for the
webmaster, moderator to send an initial post, clearly setting out what
focus, interests etc are being pursued here. As to "members" practising
self control, it's funny but one always finds it's others who would have to
do this. I found your labels, loon, kook, etc ad hominem insults or sneers,
as I do soapbox.you're totally welcome too but not on a list open to the
public. If one does not like or relish what a given person does on a list,
It's my long experience, one writes privately. If you want to do only YOUR
thing, set up your own web page and keep it closed. I'm 70 and not
accustomed to or willing to put up with being treated like an ignorant
schoolboy If you want to think your speciality as the only thing in town,
your privilege. But an open, unmoderated list is more like a pub, anybody
can walk in I walked in and I'm not the lurking type and what happened?

To keep it polite you pointed out what's relevant to you, so I did for me.
I'll be unsubscribing anyhow as I get too many posts already and my delete
finger gets tired. If you wish to say, thank god for that. feel free again,
but not to my face. This list does neither offer nor provide anything I am
interested and if you wish to place blame, do it to what's mentioned for
this site on Linguist.org. It misled me. as to sermons about how you use
words, not interested. My usual procedure when I find a list dominated by
certain styles folk I leave. I'm pleased to find linguistics has not
changed much since I made contact with it in the fifties. That's why I left
it behind in a first place. It seem you have an allergy to elves, Ufo's and
more of that ilk. I don't. If that makes me a sophead in your eyes, buy a
mirror. As to insulting remarks buy another mirror. If you want to keep your
life tidy, may I suggest you stay indoors. It sounds to me like you take
offense too quickly. I just laugh.

Adrian.

Dear Adrian,

It's not a matter of taking offence at you. There's nothing personal in it. As far as I'm aware the only pejorative word I actually used when alluding to you was "soapbox". As for calling you names like "loon" and "kook" you must be confusing me with someone else. I can't recall patronising you either.

As far as I'm concerned, you may laugh your head off. But you should understand that it is a linguistic list devoted to discussing "words" and their histories. It was set up for people who take a lively interest in such things. If you find our discussions unstimulating, if words bore you, and if no group members respond to your postings on the same wavelength, there's no reason to complain. It's just evident you've joined the wrong table in the pub. If you despise linguistics, why hang about this particular group? As for your personal comments, I've got my own website where I do "my thing"; I've no ambition to become anybody's guru. What I give here when requested is information and opinions, not sermons.

I hope you find a place where your philosophy will be appreciated.

Piotr
