Forgot to mention, Nephilim means "fallen ones" in Hebrew, and since
their reference in Genesis is placed right before the flood, there is
the implication that the were rotten dudes. But the glowing report of
them being "heores of old, men of renown" strongly suggests they
borrowed another's cultures mythology to describe the mythical
pre-flood populations. The other giant races (Raphaites etc.) were
always the enemy of the Jews, so direct IE substate influence or direct
borrowing of the Nephilim tales from the tall folks is also not likely.

Sorry for the scattered brain posting - its late.
